Chapter Eleven

“Luba!” Danya croaked through the agony, as the festering wound on his arm complained bitterly, at the trauma of yet another agonising blow. She made no reply. Again he called, with even greater urgency. Standing in silence, he strained his ears above the clamour of distant platform announcements ringing crudely from Pivdenny, through the stillness of the warm summer night. A welcome moment of silence made way for the tiny whimper of a wounded child.

“Here papa.” she cried, only yards from where he stood in the darkness. Danya followed his daughter’s voice, reassuring her as he went.

His words of comfort ceased as he caught sight of her. Straining in the blackness, his eyes struggled to comprehend the situation. She lay, cut and bleeding, hopelessly entangled in a rusty mass of timber and barbed wire.

“Is it okay papa, will it be alright?” She whispered, motionless and now even more terrified at her father’s horrified expression. Danya fought with a range of emotions: anger and disbelief, that after so much suffering such an unlikely trauma could befall them, then overwhelming compassion, his heart bleeding with pain at the sight of his daughter’s suffering. He suppressed a well of emotion, as he drew closer and took her by the hand.

“Everything will be fine Luba, don’t be afraid.” He said, as reassuringly as he could, struck by what seemed like an impossible task in the darkness. A new rush of adrenalin swept through his body, sharpening his thoughts.

“You remember the little calf Luba, back on the farm? You tell me what happened to the calf.” He said earnestly, comforting her with his warm and confident tone.

“He was stuck like me papa, and you got him out.” She tearfully recalled, wincing through the pain.

“That’s right!” Danya replied, with a reassuring smile. “I got him out, and he was just a little calf.” He said, outwardly maintaining his optimism, while inwardly he pondered the overwhelming scene.

With skill and great patience he systematically manipulated each strand of wire, just as he had done so many times back on the farm. Yet this time it was not the blood of animals, but the precious blood of his own daughter that ran through his palms and down his forearms.

Natalka and Petros, invigorated by their daring leap from the train, found their joy was short-lived, as they came upon the moonlit scene. By now the blood from Danya’s shredded fingers was flowing with equal measure, mingling with that of his daughter, and running from the ends of his elbows. Natalka gasped in shock, before instinctively taking hold of Luba’s hand and placing it against her cheek.

Petros knelt beside his father, wincing as the ever decreasing strands of wire carried their additional burden of weight, jarring their barbs deep into his sister’s skin. Danya’s hands were engaged in
